கண் திறந்திட வேண்டும்,

[He'll pull my braided hair from behind - Before I could turn my head, He'll walk ahead and disappear;
On my colorful new sari, He'll splash mud and dirt and humiliate me.]

புல்லாங்குழல் கொண்டு வருவான்; - அமுது
பொங்கி ததும்பும் நற்கீதம் படிப்பான்;
கள்ளால் மயங்குவது போலே - அதை
கண்மூடி வாய் திறந்தே கேட்டிருப்போம்.

Pullaanguzhal koNdu varuvaan; - amudhu

         pongi thadhumbum naRgeedham padippaan;

kaLLaal mayanguvadhu pOlae - adhai

         kaNmoodi vaai thirandhae kaettiruppOm.

[He'll bring a flute and play a sweet and mesmerizing melody;
As if we are drunk, we'll listen to his music, with closed eyes and open mouth!]

அங்காந்திருக்கும் வாய் தனிலே - கண்ணன்
ஆறேழு கட்டெறும்பை போட்டு விடுவான்;
எங்காகிலும் பார்த்ததுண்டோ? - கண்ணன்
எங்களை செய்கின்ற வேடிக்கை ஒன்றோ?

Angaandhirukkum vaai thanilae - KaNNan

         aaRaezhu katteRumbai pOttu viduvaan;

engaagilum paarthadhundo? - KaNNan

         engaLai seigindra vaedikkai ondro?

[Into our open mouths, Little Krishna will put six or seven big ants;
Have you seen anywhere? At least one such mischief and fun that He's making on us?]

விளையாட வாவென்றழைப்பான்; - வீட்டில்
வேலை என்றாலதை கேளாதிழுப்பான்;
இளையாரோடாடி குதிப்பான்; - எம்மை
இடையிற் பிரிந்து போய் வீட்டிலே சொல்வான்.

எம்மை துயர் செய்யும் பெரியோர் - வீட்டில்
யாவர்க்கும் நல்லவன் போலே நடப்பான்.

[Like the worm on a fishing hook - like a lamp that's placed outside,

 My heart throbbed during those long day hours!]

கூண்டு கிளியினைப்போல் - தனிமை கொண்டு மிகவும் நொந்தேன்;
வேண்டும் பொருளையெல்லாம் - மனது வெறுத்து விட்டதடீ!

KooNdu kiLiyinaippol - thanimai koNdu migavum Nondhen;

vaeNdum poruLaiyellaam - manadhu veRuthu vittadhadee!

[I felt lonely as a caged parrot

 And hated everything that I wanted!]

பாயின் மிசை நானும் - தனியே படுத்திருக்கையிலே,
தாயினை கண்டாலும் - சகியே! சலிப்பு வந்ததடீ!

paayin misai Naanum - thaniyae paduthirukkaiyilae,

thaayinai kaNdaalum - sagiyae! salippu vandhadhadee!

[Lying alone on a mat - Oh friend,

 I felt bored by the sight of even my mother's face!]

வாயினில் வந்ததெல்லாம் - சகியே! வளர்த்து பேசிடுவீர்,
நோயினை போலஞ்சினேன்; - சகியே! நுங்களுறவையெல்லாம்.

vaayinil vandhadhellaam - sagiyae! vaLarthu paesiduveer,

Noyinai polanjinaen; - sagiyae! NungaLuRavaiyellaam.

[Friends, you will talk as you please about me

 So, I despised you all like a disease]

உணவு செல்லவில்லை; - சகியே! உறக்கம் கொள்ளவில்லை.
மணம் விரும்பவில்லை; சகியே! மலர் பிடிக்கவில்லை;

uNavu sellavillai; - sagiyae! uRakkam koLLavillai.

maNam virumbavillai; sagiyae! malar pidikkavillai;

[I was unable to eat and sleep,

 And flowers didn't smell sweet to me.]

குணம் உறுதியில்லை; - எதிலும் குழப்பம் வந்ததடீ!
கணமும் உள்ளத்திலே - சுகமே காண கிடைத்தில்லை.

guNam uRudhiyillai; - edhilum kuzhappam vandhadhadee!

gaNamum uLLathilae - sugamae kaaNa kidaithadhillai.

[As I lacked a strong personality, I was always confused!

 And I wasn't happy inside for a single second.]

பாலும் கசந்ததடீ! - சகியே படுக்கை நொந்ததடீ!
கோலக்கிளி மொழியும் - செவியில் குத்தல் எடுத்ததடீ!

paalum kasandhadhadee! - sagiyae padukkai Nondhadhadee!

kOlakkiLi mozhiyum - seviyil kuthal eduthadhadee!

[Milk tasted bitter to me - my bed didn't comfort me!

 Even the sweet chirping of birds sounded annoying to my ears!]

நாலு வயித்தியரும் - இனிமேல் நம்புதற்கில்லை என்றார்;
பாலத்து சோசியனும் - கிரகம் படுத்துமென்று விட்டான்.

Naalu vayithiyarum - inimael NambuthaRkillai endraar;

paalathu chosiyanum - kiragam paduthumendru vittaan.

[Various doctors gave up, saying that I may not be normal again;

 And the astrologer said that my stars are affecting me.]

கனவு கண்டதிலே - ஒருநாள் கண்ணுக்கு தோன்றாமல்
இனம் விளங்கவில்லை - எவனோ என்னகம் தொட்டுவிட்டான்.

[As I opened my eyes to enquire about him, his form vanished;

 But only inside my heart - I felt a refreshing happiness!]

உச்சி குளிர்ந்ததடீ! சகியே! உடம்பு நேராச்சு,
மச்சிலும் வீடும் எல்லாம் - முன்னைப்போல் மனதுக்கு ஒத்ததடீ!

uchi kuLirndhadhadee! sagiyae! udambu naeraachu,

machilum veedum ellaam - munnaippol manadhukku othadhadee!

[I felt fit and peaceful from my head to toe,

 My house and all of it's surroundings seemed close to heart, as before!]

இச்சை பிறந்ததடீ! - எதிலும் இன்பம் விளைந்ததடீ!
அச்சம் ஒழிந்ததடீ! - சகியே! அழகு வந்ததடீ!

ichai piRandhadee! - edhilum inbam viLaindhadhadee!

acham ozhindhadhadee! - sagiyae! azhagu vandhadhadee!

[I developed a desire and liking in everything that I saw!

 All my fear disappeared and I started feeling more beautiful!]

எண்ணும் பொழுதிலெல்லாம் - அவன் கை இட்ட இடத்தினிலே
தண்ணென்றிருந்ததடீ! - புதிதோர் சாந்தி பிறந்ததடீ!

eNNum pozhudhilellaam - avan kai itta idathinilae

thaNNendrirundhadhadee! - pudhidhOr saanthi pirandhadhadee!

[Whenever I think of where his hand touched me

 I feel a coolness on my body! - and inside my mind!]

எண்ணி எண்ணி பார்த்தேன்; - அவன் தான் யாரென சிந்தை செய்தேன்;
கண்ணன் திரு உருவம் - அங்ஙனே கண்ணின் முன் நின்றதடீ!

eNNi eNNi paarthaen; - avan dhaan yaarena sindhai seidhaen;

kaNNan thiru uruvam - angnanae kaNNin mun Nindradhadee!

[I thought over and over again - about the one in my dreams;

 And now I know who he is - as I see Kannan's form before my eyes!]
